Grade 6 Sailing Day

On the 1st of March 2007 some of the students of 56p and 56L went sailing to Lake Yarrawonga. When everyone got there we put our bags under a shady tree. I noticed that there was no wind and that the grass was green, but then I remembered that they aren’t on water restrictions. Then a four wheel drive with a big trailer on the back with boats arrived. Jay, Jackson and I went and introduced ourselves to them. Their names were Ian and Michelle. They asked us to undo all the ropes attached to the boats. Everyone came over to help get the boats off the trailer. Michelle then asked everyone to come and sit down because she needed to talk to us about sailing and the things we needed to know. She asked us to then put on a life jacket and get into the smelly weedy water, but it was warm in at least. She told us how to capsize a boat. We all got into groups and we got in our boat and went sailing around red buoys. There was a job for everyone in the boat, a skipper, a rope puller and a leaner, and we all swapped around in doing the jobs. I was with Jay, and Jackson . There wasn’t much wind so we didn’t go very fast, but it was fun. After a while of sailing we came back into shore to have lunch. After we did we changed groups and went back out. There was more wind this time so we went faster. We went to the bridge and we all capsized and sailed back to shore. I was with Trent and Louis. Louis and I kept jumping out of the boat for fun and when we got back we swam and got changed into dry clothes. We put the boats back in the trailer and went back to school. It took about 45 minutes.

On Thursday March 1st the grade 6’s from 56P and 56L went sailing in Yarrawonga. It took about 30 minutes to get there. When we got there we found a nice shady tree to sit under. We got introduced to our instructors, Ian and Michelle, and helped them get the boats off the trailers. Michelle showed us how to sail the boats and what everything was called. We lifted the boats in to the water and away we went. The first time we went in we had to sail to a big red ball in the water, touch it without falling out of our boat, then sail back around 3 little balls, 2 yellow and 1 red. We had to do that until lunch time. After lunch we went out on the water again. This time there was a lot of wind so we went a lot faster. A lot of the boats tipped because they were harder to control when the wind was blowing them. At about 3.00pm we had to bring the boats in. Once the boats were on the bank everybody jumped in the river to go for a swim. We only got to swim for five minutes because we had to go back to school.
