Koori Day

On the 2nd May, Wangaratta Primary School had a Koori Day. We were able to get our faces painted. The colours were yellow and white. The activities we had were absolutely fun, but my favourite activity was making our very own boomerangs. The teachers we had in the Art room were Mr Capper and Mrs Long. We also did a drawing activity with Mrs Lowen, my teacher.
Mrs Lowen gave us all some pastels and a piece of A3 paper with a picture of a person on it and we had to draw an Aboriginal wearing paint all over their body. After recess my group number ten, went up to the Science room where we met two Aborigines who taught us about what they eat in the bush and some things that they did before colonization. They also brought some Aboriginal shields and fighting sticks. Their names were Wally and Kevin Cooper. At the end of the lesson Wally played the didgeridoo. It was a really fun day and I learnt a lot of new things.

As soon as the bell went on Wednesday morning we were assisgned groups that we would be in through out the day. I was in Group Seven. First up we had to go up to the Science room to listen to Wally and Kevin Cooper talk about Koorie life also had with him five items, a woomera, a ceremonial woomera, a returning boomerang, a killer boomerang and a ceremonial killer boomerang.

After we listened to Wally we went to Mrs Ferres’s room to make animals out of paper bark. I made a fish. Unlike regular Koorie art we could use non Koorie colours, like purple. After everyone had finished their animals Mrs Ferres made a mural out of all the animals. That was only the start of the day and there were many more fantastic
activities.
