On Wednesday, all of the Grade 3’s,4’s,5’s and 6’s went to the Appin Park Athletics Centre for our athletics day. We arrived early so we could have a whole day of athletics. We were divided into our age groups and gender. Some of the events that we participated in were discus, shotput, 80m sprint, hurdles, 200m, high jump, long jump and triple jump. After all of the events were completed we began our relay races. Throughout the day we were fortunate enough to have some volunteers from Galen College, who helped run a number of events. Some of the students who did really well participated in the Zone Athletics, where they competed against other school’s from the North East (some even making it to Regionals). It was a fun and enjoyable day.

On the 12th of March the Grade 6’s and a couple of Grade 5’s went sailing. First the instructors called Ian and Ian told us all we needed to know to go sailing. Then one of the instructors took us out in the water and taught us how to capsize.

Capsize drill. We got out onto the water and there was no breeze at all (not good sailing weather) until a big gust of wind came and nearly tipped us all over. After that we sailed down to the bridge. When we were going down to the bridge Ian made us capsize (which means tip the boat over). We all had to sit on one side of the boat and we swirled around in circles until we tipped.

To get the boat back upright we had to pull down on the rudder until it tipped back up. At the end we got a free swim. We all had fun and some a bit too much fun!!

On the 11th and 12th of March 2008, the Grade 3/4s, their teachers and some parent helpers, stayed in the historic town of Beechworth. We went there for a school excursion to learn about local history, have fun and to enjoy a great learning experience.

We stayed at the Old Priory which is a beautiful old building. The people were very hospitable and organized our meals and activities while we were there.

We visited many places including the powder magazine, the cemetery, the RSL,the courthouse, MB Cellars and Burke Museum. We also had a guided walking tour around town and we were visited by the people who run Stone Age gems.

They showed us a variety of different gem stones and we all purchased one as a souvenir.

Through the various activities we discovered many interesting facts about Beechworth’s history, the gold rush and lots about Ned Kelly.

One of the highlights of the trip was the reenactment of one of Ned Kelly’s trials which some students were able to participate in.

It was a great camp enjoyed by all and welearnt heaps about the history of Beechworth.

A big thank you goes out to all parents who volunteered their time and came to Beechworth.(Written by 3/4’s as a group.)
